When is the best time to go rafting?
Whatever time of year you decide to raft, you will have a great time! But here is some help…
May: Great early season rafting, slightly cooler temperatures, great water levels. Medium to High Water is likely.
June: Warmer temperatures, great water levels, high water!
July: Hot summer fun on the river, closer to the end of July, great time to heli raft the Lower Canyon.
August: Emerald coloured water, clear days, heli rafting the Lower Canyon open, Class 3 & 4 thrills.
September: Emerald coloured water, clear days, Lower Canyon open, Class 3 & 4 thrills are still an option. Lower Canyon is a must!
What is the best trip for our group?
It really depends. Here is some help…
YOU HAVE NEVER RAFTED BEFORE: We recommend all of our trips. They are all suited to first-timers! Consider the White Water Discovery trip, it’s our most popular ride!
YOU ARE A FAMILY WITH YOUNG CHILDREN: We recommend the Family Adventure, ages 6 & up!
YOU ARE ON A STAG/STAGETTE: We recommend the Ultimate Heli Adventure or White Water Discovery.
YOU WANT THE MOST COMPLETE RIVER EXPERIENCE: We recommend the Ultimate Heli Adventure. All three sections of the Kicking Horse River, a helicopter ride, lunch and a snack – this is one awesome trip.
Can I book with just one person?
Absolutely. If you are traveling alone or in pairs, you can always book a trip! There is no individual minimum booking requirement, although overall we do need a minimum of people in a raft to run a tour . Our rafts hold 8 people, so you will be partnered up with other rafters.
Is there an age minimum and age limit to go rafting?
Rafting on the Kicking Horse River is suitable for children age 4 & up. No experience is required. Folks with medical conditions should consult their doctor first.
The Middle Canyon is suitable for those who are 12+ years and weigh at least 90 lbs.
The Lower Canyon is suitable for ages 16 & up. If unsure, please ask us.
Upper Canyon: The Upper Canyon is suitable for ages 4 & up
What do I need to wear?
You need to bring is a swimsuit and towel. It’s a good idea to pack your sunglasses and sunscreen for the hot, sunny days too. It’s recommended to come with your bathing suit on under your clothes to speed up the changing process.
We have change rooms at our base and there is lots of time to get changed both before and after your trip.
Also please keep a towel handy in your car, with your dry clothes; you won’t need them until you come back to our base. We distribute all the river gear you will need for your trip out on the river. There are large change rooms at our office. The clothing you take off stays at our base where you can get access to it at the end of the trip and take a nice hot shower.
We provide: Wetsuits, booties, government approved life jackets and helmets, spray jackets and a fleece layer (if the weather is cool).
Do you take pictures along the way?
Yes, we have a professional onsite photographer who will take digital photos of you at some of the best whitewater sections on the Kicking Horse River. They will also be at our lunch spot to grab some photos of you and your group.
We also film HD video of each rafting trip every day. Our guides are equipped with GoPro cameras and they shoot video from the front and back of the rafts to capture both vantage points.
You can view your photos and video back at our base at the end of the trip, and USB sticks are available to purchase for those who are interested.
Can I bring a camera?
We don’t recommend you bring anything with you. There is always a chance cameras will get lost or wet, and there are no pockets to store your belongings.
If you want to bring a GoPro, we do have helmets with GoPro mounts, but there is a chance it could fall into the river.
The only thing you should bring is medication you’ll need throughout the day. We can give you a dry bag to keep your medication safe.
Our group would like to all be in the same raft. Is this possible?
Yes, it is possible for your group to all be in the same raft. Our rafts hold 8 people (sometimes 9 depending on the trip you book and time of season), so if your group is larger than that, you’ll have to be split up into smaller groups. The guides and river manager of the day will be aware of your group ahead of time and will be planning the best logistics for the group.
Can we request a specific raft guide?
Yes absolutely, it is possible to request a certain raft guide. We will do our very best to fulfill your request. All of our guides are experienced, knowledgeable and fun, and we can assure you it will be a great day!
What about the weather?
Whitewater rafting is fun in any type of weather, rain OR shine, provided you are properly dressed. We gear you up extremely well for your day out on the water so we can all have a great day! We raft daily rain or shine, and you’ll get wet either way.
We do not accept cancellations due to weather, and our usual cancellation policy is in effect. Unless we make the decision to cancel a tour, no refunds will be given based on poor weather.
Are the wetsuits large enough for me/my group?
This is common question that we receive. Our wetsuits come in an assortment of sizes. They are suitable for folks as small as 6 years of age, and adults up to xxxl. The same goes for the rest of our gear. Our life jackets fit up to a 52-inch chest size. Our maximum weight limit is approximately 300 lbs (136kg) due to safety reasons and the size of our gear.
When should I book?
It is usually fine to book a few days prior to your chosen date if you’re planning to come midweek, but it’s always best to book as soon as you can to guarantee we’ll have spots available. This is especially true for large groups, weekends and peak season which is July and August.
What’s included?
Included in tours: All necessary river gear, professional guide, transportation to and from the Kicking Horse River, a riverside barbecue lunch with trips that start in the morning, hot showers to freshen up after your tour, ample free parking.
